thanks for sharing your thoughts on this topic. Sometimes I feel like I’m procrastinating with my memoir and rationalize that I need to keep up with my blog, to engage with my followers. I suppose moderation is the key.

exactly as you say - i go with what feels right each day - sometimes loads of writing - others some gentle editing - i have so much still to do too - and sometimes i feel inspired to write shorter piece about something for medium or substack - it is a rhythm and i get to the end of everything eventually xxxx

To write memoir requires thoughtful introspection, while self-promotion feels like being on a morning talk show where you're supposed to up on the latest news and super witty and chatty. It seems many memoirists prefer the first mood. The best thing we can do is listen to our inner rhythm and not allow the algorithm to manipulate us.

Yeah I feel you with this post 💙 when I put my phone on charge before I go to bed, i sometimes switch it off. Next morning then I like to bask in the length of time I can keep the phone switched off - maybe do some writing or simply make the coffee, stroke the dog 🌞 it’s a nice feeling being concertedly disconnected

I should do that too. When I was visiting friends recently, I noticed that one of them left her phone in the kitchen when she went to bed. At first, I was mildly horrified. Thinking it was an accident. Then, when I saw it there the next day, I saw it was intentional. It's had me thinking about whether or not I should follow suit.

There’s a 3rd element to juggle— submitting for publication. It requires a totally different mindset from writing. I write a submission goal down, eg research journals for my genre or submit 2poems to 2 journals and treat it like an assignment.

This is so hard! Substack gives the instant gratification, but submitting for publication is also necessary and super validating when it pans out. When you say you treat it like an assignment, do you give yourself a deadline? Do you have a procedure you usually follow? I’m looking for perspective because I have found myself choosing half a dozen targets for one piece or another. Then when it’s time to submit, I second-guess my choices and then it takes so much longer!

Yes... I've completely dropped lit mag submissions off my radar since starting Substack. It feels so much more rewarding to post here. I admire that you do that, though! You are so prolific and productive!
